Just finished this book and would rate it very high, say a 4 out of 5. The author is Khaled Hosseini. I love this guys stories, (he also wrote "The Kite Runner
" which, although I haven't read the book it was an excellent movie).
A Thousand Splendid Suns
is the story of two women living in Afghanistan. It begins in the 1960's and carries through to the late 2000's. It is sad and tragic, a love story, and educational. It follows these women's lives from the time they are young until they are grown. They are from completely different backgrounds but they both endure abuse and hardship and sadness and are brought together in an unlikely way. As you follow their stories your heart goes out to them and you learn about life for women in the Middle East.
Through this story you are able to learn about life in the Middle East over the past several centuries. I really felt the pain of these people living in a war torn country, the uncertainty about the future, going through the many changes in leadership and how they are so often at the hands of whoever is the strongest at the time and is able to take over and they may be good or bad people.
It was an easy and pretty quick read, I would definitely recommend it to others and feel I have learned something from reading it as well.
